The Aidang class destroyer is a Japanese version of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Flight IIA configuration developed by Japan on the basis of the Vajra class destroyer. It is a heavy air defense Guided-missile destroyer under the Japanese Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The Aidang class is replaced by the American made Aegis system Baseline7.1 version, which lengthens the ship body by 4 meters on the basis of the King Kong class, and adds a tail building structure with hangar, which makes the Aidang class the first air defense destroyer in the Sea of Japan with complete helicopter stationed operation capability. The displacement of the Aidang class is about 500 tons more than that of the King Kong class, the standard displacement is 7700 tons, and the full load displacement is nearly 10000 tons. In order to maintain Japan's non war constitution, Japan still calls this class of ship "Corvette", and there is no Tomahawk cruise missile for ground attack on the ship.
Two Aidang class (DDG-177, 178) ships started construction on April 5, 2004 and April 6, 2005 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Nagasaki plant, and were launched on August 24, 2005 and August 30, 2006, respectively. They were handed over to the military on March 15, 2007 and March 13, 2008 in sequence. In the year of service, the Aidang class became the largest air defense destroyer of naval tonnage in the western Pacific countries. The following year, it was broken by the Sejong the Great-class destroyer of the Republic of Korea Navy. Nine years later, it was broken by the Chinese 055 Guided-missile destroyer in 2017.
