Situation Update
On 11 June 2011, a right-wing General in the Iranian Army executed a successful coup, resulting in a significant shift in power dynamics. In response to the subsequent international condemnation and possible intervention, the Iranian military has strategically deployed anti-ship missiles along the coastal areas over the week. On 18 June, Iran suddenly announced a full closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This blockade has trapped thousands of commercial cargo ships within the Persian Gulf, posing a severe threat to global maritime trade. In response to this dire situation, the United States and its allies have declared Operation Hormuz. Two aircraft carrier strike groups, USS CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt and USS CVN-73 George Washington, alongside the Marine Special Purpose Force with its amphibious battle fleet USS Tarawa CV-40, were sent to the region under the command of the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet. Simultaneously, the U.S. Air Force's 380th Air Expeditionary Wing based in Al Dhafra Air Base was also prepared for a full-scale air campaign. The Joint Air Operation Tasking Center has scheduled a first phase strike, during the initial three days, the United States Navy and Air Force will seamlessly collaborate to execute a series of air combat operations, anti-radar missions, and precision strikes. The primary objectives during the first phase is to establish air superiority and degrade Iran's air defense capabilities along the coastal area; and the secondary objectives are to neutralize Iran's key military assets, including command posts and weapon storage facilities. This initiative is designed to create a strategic pivot for subsequent ground operations by the United States Marine Corps, aiming to disarm Iran's military presence in the coastal region, and ultimately reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The success of this operation will not only maintain the global flow of commerce and securing energy supply, but also, deter any attempts to block this vital trade route, and ensure the stability and resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges.
