The Mirage F1CZ was ordered by the SAAF to replace its Mirage 3 fleet. The CZ was developed for the SAAF from the standard French C version.

The F1CZs were used extensively during the Border War conflict, with good results. 1 aircraft was damaged during combat, and the F1CZ served in the SAAF as a frontline fighter until retirement in 1993.
