Bf-109G-2 Stab I./JG77 February 1943 Matmata Tunisia captured

This aircraft was found by allied forces when they captured the airfield at Matmata in Tunisia, it was seemingly left behind when the Luftwaffe retreated from the area. Subsequently U.S. Army Air Force markings were applied to the wings and the machine was studied for potentially useful information.
It seems like the aircraft got a replacement tail shortly before it was captured, since said tail was not even painted properly yet.

It was the personal crate of Gruppenkommandeur I./JG77
Oscar-Heinrich "Pritzl" Bär (25 May 1913 – 28 April 1957) who was a German Luftwaffe military aviator, fighter ace during World War II, and a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. He flew more than 1000 combat missions, and fought in the Western, Eastern and Mediterranean theatres. On 18 occasions he survived being shot down, was credited with at least 208 and up to 228 aerial victories depending on the source, 16 of which were in a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter.  96 on the Eastern front and 124 on the Western front, of which 21 were US heavy bombers and one a Mosquito, achieving an ace in a day on six separate occasions. He claimed his first aerial victory on 25 September 1939 on the French border and his last on 28 April 1945 over southern Germany.
Bär continued his career in aviation after World War II, including a lead position for motor-powered flight with the Deutscher Aero Club. He also worked as a consultant and test pilot in the field of sport aviation, testing aircraft before they went on the market. On 28 April 1957, while conducting a routine flight-check in a light aircraft, a LF-1 Zaunkönig, Bär put the aircraft into a flat spin, the final manoeuvre in the test process. Unable to regain control, he was killed in the resulting crash.
