Fighter Interceptor Squadron 118 is a unique unit in the Emmerian Air Force. It is one of the few interceptor squadrons stationed outside of Emmeria at Naval Air Station Östhus in east Nordennavic. Like its sister squadrons the 119th and 117th, Guardian is a long-standing military unit in the Emmerian military. It was made up of several Chivalric Orders who had originally opposed King Aurelius II in his quest to unite Emmeria. After unification, these Orders pledged their fealty to Aurelius II and were assigned to defend the Northern reaches of the nation, earning the collective title “Guardians of the North”. In 1921 they became the 3rd Pursuit Group, consisting of the 1st, 12th, and 15th squadrons respectively, operating the Fokker D. VII. By the start of the Cold War in the 1950s, they had been consolidated into a single fighter squadron and were facing deactivation due to budget cuts. Nuclear capable bombers brought forth a new emphasis on defense of northern Emmeria however, and the Guardians were restructured as the 118th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in the 12th Air Division, assigned to Naval Air Station Östhus. As part of a long-standing treaty with the Kingdom of Nordennavic, NAS Östhus remains the northernmost Emmerian military base, aptly suiting the moniker of the 118th. Just as their sister squadrons, Guardian was originally equipped with the then state of the art MiG-17. In 1962 it was replaced by MiG-21 as part of a continuing arms deal with Yuktobania. Through the following decades, the MiG-21s of all squadrons saw several upgrade packages to maintain readiness. In 2010, the aging MiGs of the 12th ADV were authorized to be replaced by the Mirage 2000C, with the 117th and 119th getting priority due to their closer proximity to Estovakia. This leaves Guardians as the single FIS operating solely the MiG-21 by 2013.
