In the early days of World War II, a P-51D Mustang, serial number 44-74982, roared through European skies, its Merlin engine humming with purpose escorting B-17 bombers. Its six .50-caliber machine guns tearing though Luftwaffe fighters that got too close. Originally Piloted by Lt. James "Hawk" Thompson, it bore the name "Lone Star" and a painted Texas flag on its nose, a nod to Hawk’s roots. The Mustang danced through dogfights, its bubble canopy giving Hawk unmatched visibility as he claimed four Messerschmitts before V-Day. Its dirty aluminum skin bore the scars fr om flak and dogfights, but it always brought Hawk home. When peace eventually came, the American fighter was sent home and decommissioned.

Left to languish in an Arizona boneyard until 1958 when Gulf Oil, seeking a bold publicity stunt, purchased it. Gulf Oil, flush with postwar ambition, bought the Mustang at auction. They saw it not as a war relic but a symbol of speed, pride and resilience, perfect for their brand. After a two year complete restoration, which brought it to gleaming perfection with a vibrant highly polished aluminum finish. It was painted in vibrant orange and blue, Gulf’s corporate colors, with Gulfs logo emblazoned on the tail and under the right wing.

The Gulf company envisioned a grand adventure: a record-breaking flight around the world to showcase its aviation fuel and American engineering. In 1960, veteran pilot Clara "Sky" Morgan, a former WASPs flier (Woman Airforce Service Pilot) was chosen to helm the journey. The Gulf Mustang was fitted with polished external fuel tanks, cutting-edge navigation gear, and a beautifully polished airframe to reduce drag. On June 15, it took off fr om New York, bound for London. Over the next 30 days, Clara and the Gulf Mustang crossed continents and oceans, landing in Paris, Cairo, Karachi, Tokyo, and Honolulu. Each stop drew crowds, mesmerized by the warbird’s sleek lines, bright colors and Clara’s daring. In Rio, it raced a thunderstorm across the coastline; in Tokyo, it drew gasps from a nation rebuilding. Over the Australian outback, Clara pushed the plane to 400 mph, the Gulf colors a blur against the red earth.

In Karachi, a sandstorm nearly grounded them, but Clara’s skill and the Mustang’s reliability powered through. The Gulf Mustang faced its toughest leg over the Pacific, wh ere fuel margins were razor-thin. Clara nursed the plane through turbulence, trusting the Packard-built Merlin to keep her aloft. On July 14, 1960, the Gulf Mustang touched down in San Francisco, completing the 25,000-mile journey in a record 120 flight hours. Gulf’s PR campaign was a triumph, and the Gulf Mustang became a symbol of resilience and innovation. Post-flight, the aircraft toured airshows and competed in air races before being retired to a Texas museum in 1965, wh ere it stands today, with its legacy intact—a war hero turned global ambassador, forever etched in aviation history.
