On 17 July 1944, the 513th Fighter Squadron of the 406th Fighter Group tested the HVAR (High Velocity Aerial Rocket) in combat for the first time. Their target: The huge German locomotive repair shop in Nevers, south of Paris. Their score: 25 locomotives destroyed. The HVAR instantly became the best anti-armor weapon of the war.
