After Paris fell to the Allies, German units still inside France were ordered to retreat to the German border. A large group of German vehicles was spotted heading toward Belfort Gap, a pass through the mountains along the border.
The 406th Fighter Group was given the job of attacking the enemy vehicles on 7 September 1944. They attacked with bombs and by strafing and destroyed about 300 German vehicles. They then refueled and rearmed and came back and blew up 200 more. The German commander surrendered on the condition the P-47s would halt the attacks and 20,000 German soldiers became Allied POWs.
The attack resulted in the 406th FG receiving the Presidential Unit Citation.
