“Iron Recovery” is a critical Search and Rescue operation in the heart of Afghanistan’s operational area, set against the backdrop of ongoing Taliban attacks that continue to challenge coalition forces. On April 7, 2013, a CH-47 Chinook, CALLSIGN: STALKER, was shot down while conducting a resupply mission north of Jalalabad.

Su-25s figured prominently in Soviet operations in Afghanistan, but 23 were shot down by various anti-aircraft weapons used by the Mujahadeen and a similar number were non-operational losses. An Su-25 shot down near Kabul in January 1989 was the last Soviet aircraft loss before they withdrew from Afghanistan.

Briefing (05:00 AM, Jalalabad Airfield): Special forces trapped under heavy fire in Kunar. Rapid evacuation via CH-47 Chinook. Approach (05:15 AM): Low-altitude flight through the valley. Enemy fire! Gunners return fire as Harris keeps the course steady. Extraction (05:20 AM): Turbulent landing in a dust storm. Two wounded. RPG explodes nearby. Team rushes aboard—immediate liftoff under covering fire. Return (05:45 AM, Kandahar): Mission successful, wounded receive medical care. Adrenaline still high—another mission is only a matter of time.
