Born in the early 1970s to remedy the first-generation AV-8A's operational shortcomings, the AV-8B project swiftly redefined short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities. Making its maiden flight in November 1981, the Harrier II entered US Marine Corps service by January 1985. With each iteration, it pushed the boundaries of VTOL technology and remains a potent force on modern battlefields.
The push toward a specialized night-attack role materialized on June 26th, 1987, with the maiden flight of a modified AV-8B in the Night Attack configuration. By 1989, the USMC began receiving these aircraft at VMA-214 in Yuma, Arizona, marking a milestone in night operations. Subsequent units received their AV-8B N/A Harriers by 1992, elevating the Marine Corps' ability to strike targets with precision after dark.
