DCS: AV-8B Night Attack V/STOL

Origins of a Jump-Jet Revolution

Born in the early 1970s to remedy the first-generation AV-8A's operational shortcomings, the AV-8B project swiftly redefined short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities. Making its maiden flight in November 1981, the Harrier II entered US Marine Corps service by January 1985. With each iteration, it pushed the boundaries of VTOL technology and remains a potent force on modern battlefields.

Carving the Night Sky

The push toward a specialized night-attack role materialized on June 26th, 1987, with the maiden flight of a modified AV-8B in the Night Attack configuration. By 1989, the USMC began receiving these aircraft at VMA-214 in Yuma, Arizona, marking a milestone in night operations. Subsequent units received their AV-8B N/A Harriers by 1992, elevating the Marine Corps' ability to strike targets with precision after dark.

Introducing the AV-8B N/A

Originally designated the AV-8D, the AV-8B N/A integrated cutting-edge technology for night combat, including the NAVFLIR camera system from GEC-Marconi. To further enhance its low-visibility capabilities, pilots were equipped with GEC Cat's Eyes night vision goggles. The result was an airframe ready to operate on the darkest nights with unprecedented situational awareness.

Eyes on Every Angle

Beyond its enhanced vision systems, the AV-8B N/A featured a fully modernized cockpit—complete with color Multifunction Displays, a broader HUD field of view, and a color CRT digital moving map. These upgrades supported near-seamless heads-down operations, enabling the pilot to maintain situational awareness while managing advanced sensor data.

The Heart of a Modern Harrier

Central to the N/A's improved performance is its upgraded Rolls-Royce Pegasus 11-61 vectored-thrust turbofan, delivering greater thrust and reliability. Incorporating decades of operational experience, it stands as the pinnacle of vertical-lift strike evolution in DCS World.
