Developed in the 1950s and entering service in 1961, the UH-1 'Iroquois'—or 'Huey'—quickly became synonymous with the Vietnam War. This light utility and combat helicopter earned global fame for its starring roles in iconic Hollywood films such as The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. Yet its real spotlight came from thousands of real-world missions that shaped modern helicopter warfare.
Nicknamed the "slick," the Huey excelled at transporting and inserting combat troops deep into contested areas. A standard airborne assault might see ten slicks ferrying troops, protected by dedicated gunships, with a command helicopter circling overhead. Beyond troop insertion, the Huey's missions ranged from supply runs and reconnaissance to search and rescue and medical evacuation, where its ability to carry up to 14 troops or 6 stretchers proved invaluable.
