cannon. With a rate of fire of 4,200 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of
3,500 ft/s, the Thunderbolt is the ultimate tank buster.

Title of this section

The GAU-8’s accuracy allows it to plant 80% of its rounds within a 40 foot (12.4 m) diameter circle fired from around a kilometer distance. Optimum strafe engagement profile is 4,000 feet (1,220 m) in a 30-degree dive.

Bullet proof, almost.

The primary design consideration after firepower was survivability with over 1200 lbs of titanium being used in key areas. This, combined with system redundancy, indicated a general idea of making the A-10 all but impervious to light AAA up to 14.5mm and able to survive multiple hits from 23 AA auto-cannons and small MANPAD SAMs.

Air to Ground

The A-10 can carry an amazing array of weapons 16,000lbs on 11 hardpoints, from the usual raft of rockets, dumb bombs (500lbs to 2000lbs each), dumb and smart CBUs, through laser-guided and TV guided bombs, GPS-guided bombs (JDAMs), up to 6 x Maverick fire and forget ground attack missiles, 2 x AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, in addition to the Sniper and Litening sensor and targeting pods.

Strength in numbers

The A-10C includes an improved fire control system (FCS), electronic countermeasures (ECM) and smart bomb targeting. It is all-weather combat capable using the Litening and Sniper targeting pods. It has a HOTAS, multi-colour glass MFDs, a modern comms suite including Link-16 and SATCOM.
