On 25 June 1944, Maj. Donald Hillman, XO of the 365th Fighter Group "Hell Hawks" led the 387th Fighter Squadron on an armed reconnaissance patrol of the Chartres-Dreux region in search of German vehicles. Instead, they found German fighters.
